I want to share what I've learned about the breed, and my week-to-week struggles and joys of Dane ownership, as well as lots of pictures of Savage from puppy-hood to adult.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comBlogger199125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19039299.post-48505258783805715442015-08-26T12:16:00.003-05:002015-08-26T12:16:56.412-05:00Grey Whiskers

This summer I've been dog sitting my boss's yellow labrador puppy, Reno, almost daily, and so Savage has a new friend (whether he likes it or not!). They spend most of their time together play-fighting in the grass, and I love seeing my old boy acting like a puppy again.
I also think being around Savvy is helping to teach Reno manners around other dogs. Savvy and I took a 2 week road trip down to North Carolina in November. The above picture is from Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge on the NC Outer Banks, where Savage first saw the Atlantic Ocean. He was less than impressed, and mildly spooked by the crashing surf.
During most of our trip the weather was unseasonably cool, which is preferable for Sav and me (especially since my car Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19039299.post-86402414317236024662013-10-20T07:42:00.004-05:002013-10-20T08:46:54.632-05:00Fall Colors!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19039299.post-85726454568478273802013-05-15T13:01:00.002-05:002013-05-15T13:01:22.875-05:00Big Yawn..!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19039299.post-23878462647946945042013-04-19T12:52:00.003-05:002013-04-19T12:52:41.775-05:00April?
It seems the winter will never end here in Northeastern Minnesota. We had experienced a little bit of spring earlier this month and the temperature was so nice that Savage and I did quite a bit of outdoor activities and walking, even though it involved both of us wading through mud. The latest snowstorm brought many inches of snow and high winds, making it really miserable to get outside Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19039299.post-33880409623894528442013-03-06T09:40:00.001-06:002013-03-06T09:40:11.357-06:00Savvy's New ToyUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19039299.post-57839715038083793262012-12-11T09:46:00.000-06:002012-12-11T09:46:01.579-06:007 Years Old
My amazing animal turned 7 years old on November 17th, 2012. I'm so grateful that I've had him by my side, healthy and happy, for so long. Great Danes are a short-lived breed, and I've known quite a few that have passed away well before 7 years of age. Whether the reasons were accidents, inevitable health problems, or disreputable breeding programs, I know I am blessed to have my baby with me Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19039299.post-14359739563029055292012-11-10T20:32:00.002-06:002012-11-10T20:32:55.939-06:00Cold Doggies

It only took 6 and a half years, but Savage I finally took Savage on his very first canoe trip. I'd been avoiding this for the obvious reasons, the first being that I didn't want to get wet unexpectedly, but eventually I decided leaving him home this time would be unfair as it was an all-day fishing outing.
As our group was launching our canoes at the landing he was really excited to Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19039299.post-64686163449562561042012-04-21T22:32:00.002-05:002012-04-21T22:32:27.569-05:00Dinner Time

Collecting beach rocks is an occasional hobby of mine and yesterday it was a perfect opportunity to test out Savage's new backpack. We are lucky enough to live just a mile or so from Paradise Beach on Superior's north shore, which is an excellent place to hunt for the famous Lake Superior agates. Savage carried water bottles and a couple small geology books in his pack. So I bought Savage a new backpack. It's a Granite Gear "Ruff Rider" pack (used) that I got for $20.00. I immediately put it on him and he seemed not to care at all about it, which is great. Following suggestions I have not put anything in it and just let him wear it around to get used to it. So far, so good.
The pack is a size L, but it fits him all right as far as I can tell. Our little family has been very busy; we have recently started a new business venture - our own marine engine service and repair shop (my boyfriend is a marine mechanic). This is turning out to be a great opportunity for all of us. They spent a whole day together, chasing each other around and generally acting like little puppies. Both slept like logs that night. Since Tula is a rescue we're not quite sure what her pedigree is. There's surely some Brittany involved, and possibly golden retriever?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19039299.post-86186435759651989932011-03-30T19:47:00.002-05:002011-03-30T19:55:24.394-05:00Spring Is Here...And Savvy is squinting his eyes against the sun! I chose to buy a foal blanket as opposed to their dog blankets (which do seem really nice) because as usual, the dog jackets don't take into account the size of a Great Dane. Also, this one sounded very well-made, with 420 denier nylon, fiberfill insulation, and soft nylon liningUnknownnoreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19039299.post-23990506817682625572010-12-16T08:14:00.004-06:002010-12-16T08:25:26.897-06:00Savage And ThorIn November we spent a week or so deer hunting in southern Minnesota with Randy's daughter and son-in-law. Of course I brought my Great Dane with us, and hoped he'd get along fine with their three dogs. Both older dogs (a neutered male yellow lab and a female cocker spaniel) have been introduced to Savage before, and they really don't pay much attention to him. For his part, Sav pretty much Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3
